The Starlink inflight internet service from SpaceX can now be installed on Bombardier Global Express business jets. An STC was issued to Nextant Aerospace, the MRO arm of fractional business jet operator Flexjet, allowing for the installations to move forward.
Flexjet currently operates approximately eight of the ultra-long range aircraft in its fleet.
Nextant operates as the engineering arm of Flexjet and to that end, achieved a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for installation of Starlink high speed internet on the Bombardier Global Express on behalf of Flexjet.
– Jay Heublein, Head of Flexjet Global Maintenance and Product division, which includes Nextant
Flexjet will leverage the Nextant STC to complete installs of the system on its in-house fleet. The company is also “offering to sell these kits to Starlink-approved MROs to install in retail or third party aircraft,” according to Jay Heublein, who leads Flexjet Global Maintenance and Product division, which includes Nextant.
This STC joins the Starlink installation STC for the Gulfstream G650 also developed by the company for its in-house fleet. Similarly, that STC is also available for purchase by other MROs or Fleet Operators for installations. Trans-Exec is one known licensee of the Gulfstream STC, part of a deal announced at NBAA last October.
Heublein also notes that Nextant’s engineers are continuing to work in collaboration with SpaceX do the same for several other Gulfstream, Bombardier and Embraer aircraft – and those installation kits should be available for purchase later this year.”
The Starlink system provides inflight internet service via SpaceX’s constellation of low earth orbit satellites. It has been selected for installation by notable business jet fleet operators, including TransExec, Aero, and FlexJet. It has also been chosen by commercial airlines, including JSX, Hawaiian Airlines, Zipair, and airBaltic. Qatar Airways and Air New Zealand have signed on for trials of the service as well.
