Uncharted movie taps Travis Knight to direct, since it is apparently still happening

It’s a big news day for Tom Holland.

The Uncharted movie — you know, the one that’s been floating around in development for, like, basically a generation at this point — lands a new director with Travis Knight. Knight directed last winter’s Bumblebee and Academy Award nominated Kubo and the Two Strings. Holland is still attached to star as Nathan Drake.

Earlier this year, Cloverfield Lane’s Dan Trachtenberg departed the project after working on it for eight months. The project has been through multiple directors and writers, with Seth Rogen even in the talks for a script at one point. Mark Wahlberg was supposed to star and Chris Pratt was allegedly offered the role, but Wahlberg backed out around 2014 and Pratt turned the studio down.

The Uncharted movie was supposed to come out in June 2016, but that date has since moved around a couple of times. Currently, there is no release date, but production is set to begin early next year.

Last we heard, the film will be an origin story focusing on a young Nathan Drake as he grows into the explorer we see in the Uncharted games. Funnily enough, Amy Hennig, the creative director of the Uncharted series has a background in film, but none of the producers have considered her as director.

“There is this perceived barrier and a prejudice about video game folks versus people in Hollywood,” Hennig told Polygon in August, though she’s hopeful for the future. “The old-school folks are probably just going to be dinosaurs. This attitude that those of us in games aren’t capable — well, we clearly are. How many Uncharted games have we made since they optioned the [rights] and haven’t made a film? We’re OK at this.”
