A driver has been banned from the roads after he was hit with a record-breaking 144 points for speeding.

Ashley Peart, 27, was handed a three-year ban from the roads after four different cars, registered in his name, were caught breaking the speed limit 24 times.

The 27-year-old’s point haul, thought to be a UK record, is 132 more than the usual 12 points that normally see motorists banned from the roads.

The court heard how Peart failed to tell police who was behind the wheel of the four cars – an Audi A3, a BMW 1 Series, a silver Ford Focus and a Ford Focus Sport – which were caught speeding between July last year and this January in Laindon, Rayleigh and Southend.

Police made contact with Peart but he either ignored them or failed to respond with enough information about who had been driving.

Cops even went to his home twice to hand deliver the notices but Peart still failed to respond.

He was eventually called to Southend Magistrates Court last week where he was found guilty of failing to identify the driver of a vehicle.

Peart was fined £1,490 and ordered to pay court costs of £800 and a victim surcharge of £30.

He had his driving licence endorsed with 144 points.

PC Daniel Cordwell, from Essex Police, said Peart’s haul was more than double the previous highest he’d seen at 60 points.

He said: ‘Peart produced insufficient and misleading details on numerous occasions and by his own admission he had an overwhelming amount of offences to deal with in a short period of time, which he chose to try and ignore in the hope they would go away.

‘These cases did not go away and he has been disqualified. Hopefully this will give Peart time to think about the consequences of his actions. Essex Police takes road safety very seriously.

‘If you are caught speeding and fail to respond to us, we will find you and we will take you to court.’

PC Cordwell said drivers trying to ‘get off’ speeding tickets by claiming someone else was driving risked being prosecuted for perverting the course of justice.

Peart, of Salisbury Avenue, Westcliff, Essex, appeared before magistrates last Tuesday.
