Periscope now has close to 2 million active users who check the live-streaming app everyday.

The Twitter subsidiary released new figures today (Aug. 12), giving outsiders a glimpse into its progress. Since its high-profile launch on March 26, 10 million accounts have been registered, though Periscope declined to say how many of them are active on a monthly basis. Collectively, Periscope users are watching about 40 years of video each day.

Though 2 million daily users isn’t a massive number, it appears Periscope has managed to keep its momentum going—and even accelerated in May when it released an Android app—which is more than its competitor Meerkat can say.

Periscope and Meerkat, considered the two breakout apps of 2015, started out neck and neck, but Periscope, benefiting from its association with Twitter, as well as its distribution on the social network, quickly pulled ahead and has continued racing forward.

According to App Annie, Periscope was the eighth and ninth most popular social-networking app on Google Play and the App Store, respectively, yesterday (Aug. 11).

That’s a major lead over Meerkat, which ranked 186 and 316 in the social-networking category on Android and iOS, respectively, on the same day. (Meerkat last reported 2 million users in May.)

YouNow, which also lets users stream footage from their phones, hasn’t gotten nearly as much buzz as either company this year, but the four-year-old app has seen a slight lift in popularity from all the attention paid to live streaming. It ranked No. 21 and 20 on Android and iOS yesterday; a year ago it was at 34 and 23, respectively.

Periscope might be in the lead, but it’s important to remember that it’s only been around for a little over four months. “This is not a zero-sum game,” Josh Elman, a Greylock partner who has invested in Meerkat, told Quartz in April. “There’s so much opportunity here, it’s crazy.”
