CyPhy Progammable Drone Puts IoT In The Air

Drones are one of the most popular tech toys doing the rounds. During Cisco Live 2015 in San Diego, we chatted to some of Cisco’s team at DevNet and had a look at the CyPhy drone. For the price, it’s one of the most advanced drones we’ve seen.

Lifehacker’s Cisco Live 2015 news is presented by our ongoing IT Pro coverage, offering practical advice for deploying tech in the workplace.

The CyPhy LVL 1 drone is currently offered through KickStarter for $US495 by CyPhy Works CEO Helen Greiner, one of the co-founders of iRobot (the Roomba people). Given the pedigree of this KickStarter, this is one campaign we feel confident will deliver, not leaving contributors high and dry.

Where the CyPhy LVL 1 rubber hits the IoT road is with its geospatial capability. For example, you’ll be able to program the CyPhy LVL 1 to fly within a specific area. The integrated camera will also support a number of different shooting modes now that the KickStarter campaign has flown past its initial stretch goal of $500,000.

Flight control is via a smartphone app that lets you also view the camera feed in realtime. The developers are claiming the drone is very easy to fly and very stable – making it “an extension of your arm”. The stability is important so that you can capture great pics and video from the camera.

The developers say the battery will last over 20 minutes of very steady flying.
