Bike tours, kid-friendly design workshops at Frank Lloyd Wright homes

Oak Park is home to the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs. This summer, you’ll be able to tour the Prairie School architecture and learn about the neighborhood’s history on weekly bike tours.

In addition, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust has lined up a handful of other summer programming that’ll keep kids busy, and take advantage of the beautiful warm weather.

So, if you haven’t had a chance to see some of Wright’s historic homes now is a great time to visit. Plus, it might give you an opportunity to explore some of the beautiful historic neighborhoods his designs are located in, like Oak Park and Hyde Park.

Here is a rundown of the summer events from the FLW Trust.

A guided bike tour of Frank Lloyd Wright homes

The tour will begin at Wright’s Home and Studio in Oak Park. You’ll get to hear about 21 Wright-designed homes including the Frank Thomas House, Heurtley House, Cheney House, and Furbeck House. This 2-hour tour will start at 9:30 a.m. and run Friday through Saturday between June and September. Tickets start at $40 and include a bike if you need one.

Kids design workshops

Each week feature a new design project, which you can find out about on the Twitter, aimed at families with kids in Pre-K to 5th grade. The drop-in style workshop takes place in the courtyards at Wright’s Home and Studio in Oak Park, and the Robie House in Hyde Park. Check the Trust’s website for details on weekly dates in July and August.

Family-friendly open house at Wright’s Home and Studio

The annual open house this year takes place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 15. The free event will have scheduled tours, art activities for kids in the courtyard, and refreshments. It will be a chance to take in the first building the iconic architect designed completely on his own, and spent more than 20 years refining as he lived there.

New audio tour at the Robie House

In 1910, the Robie House was completed and was the last of Wright’s true Prairie-style homes. The new self-guided walking audio tour explains the story of the house’s history and the surrounding Hyde Park neighborhood. Earlier this year the Robie House reopened after an extensive restoration that opened more public areas, so if you haven’t visited in a while you might see something new.
