Tesla Makes Model X Crossover Launch Official: September 29

Tesla Motors  made the launch of the Model X, its first crossover utility vehicle, official today.

In keeping with CEO Elon Musk's tweet earlier this month, Tesla will officially announce the Model X on September 29 at 7 p.m. in Fremont, Calif., as indicated on press invites that went out on Monday.  No other information was provided in the invite (except for the image above).

"First production cars will be handed over on Sept 29 at our Fremont factory," Musk said earlier this month in a tweet.   And in an effort to clarify some confusion about pricing for the X, Musk added in a series of September 2 tweets: "With same options, Model X is $5k more than an S due to greater size & body complexity. Sig Series is fully loaded, hence high price." ("Sig" refers to the high-end Signature Series.)

The top-of-the-line Model X Signature series will start at $132,000, pack a 90 kilowatt-hour battery, have an EPA estimated range of 240 miles on one charge, get to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, and boast a top speed of 155 mph, as previously reported. The $132,000 price tag is before the federal tax credit or state or local incentives. A $10,000 Ludicrous Mode speed upgrade drops the 0-60 to 3.2 seconds. Other Model X variants will be priced lower, similar to pricing of the Model S, as stipulated by Musk (above).

Standard Equipment: Falcon Wing rear doors with built in sensors for opening in garages of any height; automatically retracting rear spoiler; rear accessory hitch for bike or ski carrier; free long distance travel on Tesla's supercharger network; parking sensors and blind spot warning; automatic emergency parking.

Signature Series: Autopilot with self parking and automatic lane steering; Smart Air Suspension with GPS memory; independently operable 3-adult second row seats; flat-folding, 2-adult third row seats.

Musk, earlier this month, also mentioned the Model 3, Tesla's future mass-market vehicle. "Model 3, our smaller and lower cost sedan will start production in about 2 years. Fully operational Gigafactory needed." And in a separate tweet: "$35k price, unveil in March, preorders start then."
