After not finding a buyer by Wednesday for the historic Frank Lloyd Wright Building in downtown Whitefish, the owner went through with demolishing the building.

Bulldozers crashed through windows and tore down the historic building early Wednesday evening.

The building has been there since 1958.

Onlookers watched as piles of rubble fell to the ground.

Some residents we talked to were sad to see the building go, while others told NBC Montana they were excited to see what would go in its place.

One person who was especially sad to see the building go was Whitefish native Jackie Cassidy.

"It's been something that we've had here forever, especially being from a small town and Frank Lloyd Wright being such a huge architect and someone I've grown to admire,” said Cassidy. “It's just a bummer to see it go away."

Construction crews stopped for the night at around 7 p.m. They said it was too dangerous and unsafe to continue in the dark.

Before demolition began workers salvaged some parts of the building, including the Frank Lloyd Wright sign.
