Did you catch the news from last week that a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Los Feliz, California has hit the market for $23 million? If that wasn't enough of the master architect's work, there's another property of his on the market a few minutes outside of Washington D.C. The only catch is this one, called Marden House, comes with a main house and the total asking price is $62.95 million.
Listed with TTR/Sotheby's International Realty, the home(s) belonged to the late Jim Kimsey, cofounder of America Online, and overlook the Potomac River from a cliff-like perch (fittingly, the main house is called The Falls). Perhaps that was the inspiration for Wright to build the home in the subtle shape of a fish.
The best view of the home's shape is this interior shot of the main living area which shows the curve of the "fish" body.
That perfectly-proportioned curve leads all the way to a narrow point overlooking the Potomac River. The fish's nose, perhaps?
You can see the rest of the curve from the other vantage point that leads to the open plan living room.
A photo taken from the main house that looks down over Marden House shows how all the pieces of the interior create the subtle outline of a fish when viewed from the outside.
But of course it isn't just the home's shape that is worth looking at. So many other Wrightsian touches are inside these wall-to-wall windows. Notice in the living room how the bookshelves are designed to function as walls that delineate the space as separate from the rest of the room.
There's a fireplace with an extra side open to the rest of the room.
The windows above the kitchen have the angular line patterns so common to Wright's designs.
The bedroom has an open-sided fireplace and floating-style shelves similar to those in the rest of the home.
The study has these unusual windows that almost look like signs of the cross.
But when you see what they look like from the outside, it all makes sense. They add texture to the outside of the building and in a very quiet way almost look like gills.
As impressive as Marden House is, the main house is also stunning. Like, really stunning. The 48,000-square-foot home has custom-made furniture, expansive river views, an infinity pool, a 30-car motor court, and enough bedrooms to host several families.
