We already knew that Bill Murray would be starring in a musical Christmas special for Netflix debuting on Dec. 4, and we've already seen the teaser listing its massive slate of celebrity guest stars. But now there’s a full trailer for A Very Murray Christmas that gives a better idea of the plot for the Sofia Coppola-directed special.
Murray is performing a Christmas show at New York City's Carlyle hotel, but a blizzard prevents anyone from showing up to be in the audience. Despondent, Murray throws in the towel initially, but then gets convinced to cobble together a ramshackle special with the help of whoever drops by. We knew the guests list was prodigious, but seeing Amy Poehler trying to lift Murray’s spirits, Michael Cera being a total Debbie Downer and ragging on Monuments Men, and Miley Cyrus joining Murray for "Sleigh Ride" makes us believe this will be a seminal holiday spectacular. It's also just lovely to see Murray reunited with his Lost in Translation director Coppola to recapture the effortless charm he's known for.
Pause at: 0:06 for Paul Schaffer; 0:43 for Rashida Jones and Jason Schwartzman; 1:00 for Jenny Lewis and Phoenix as Carlyle catering staff; 1:13 for Chris Rock.
Essential Quote: "OK you’re not a singer, and we don’t have time to find out if you’re a dancer."—Murray, to a hotel employee he picked at random to sing "The 12 Days Of Christmas"
