Bubba Watson shares his No. 1 piece of advice for golf parents

Golf is one of those sports that attracts incredibly pushy parents. Perhaps it’s the individual nature of it: there are no coaches to protect players, like in other sports.

Well, two-time Masters champ Bubba Watson has some good advice for all those helicopter parents: Back off. Bubba, who has two young kids himself, says it’s all about having fun. The competitiveness will come with age, bit by bit each year.

Speaking ahead of this week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open:

“The first thing I said was to the other coaches the other day. I said, you talk Caleb, I’ll talk to your kids. You teach him and I’ll teach yours. So it’s a different mindset.”

He continued:

“For me, at this young age, 5 years old, just have fun with it. I started golf at 6, started tee ball at 4. So my dad let me do my own thing. But, you know, he was very loud about it when he discussed how to get better. So when I talked to my son or the other kids, it’s truly about having fun. Like, there are some — there have been some funny moments, and we’ll just call it funny moments where it’s 5-year-old tee ball. What does it really matter? Just let them see the ideas and then hopefully grow from there. Next year they get a little more serious, and every year they grow into it, and they understand the game a little bit better.”
