A preservation battle is under way in Scarsdale, New York, located about 25 miles north of Manhattan. The building is question is a 1950 home designed by Edgar Tafel, a noted Frank Lloyd Wright disciple who had worked on Fallingwater. An archival newspaper page from August 1950 shows Tafel’s drawings of the house and describes it as “combining Roman brick, cypress, double glass and slate roof.”

Restored in the late 1990s, the home was listed on the market for $2.7 million in February and sold in May for $2.97 million. However, it appears that the new owner was moving towards tearing down the property. An application to Scarsdale’s Committee for Historic Preservation to demolish all or part of the home was denied in late May, and that’s how the property found its way back on the market in late June at $2.99M.

The highlight of the 3,300-square-foot residence has to be its open living room with a vaulted ceiling, statement brick fireplace, and wall of glass overlooking the grounds. Next we have the formal dining room and an eat-in kitchen with stainless steel appliances and built-in seating. There are three bedrooms overall, including a master suite on the first floor, plus a lower-level recreation room with access to the yard and pool. Ah, the pool. It’s sizable at 45 by 15 feet, and features a built-in spa, automatic pool cover, and blue-stone decking.
