David Lynch makes Twin Peaks into a VR game – and it looks suitably freaky

Players can visit the Black Lodge, Twin Peaks' Sheriff's Department, and the glass box observation room, while solving the mysteries of Lynch’s classic series.

David Lynch has collaborated with developer Collider Games and games publisher Showtime to create a VR game based on his cult TV series Twin Peaks. In the game, which is due to be released on 13 December, players can explore some of the key locations featured in the series, as well as solving puzzles in an attempt to unlock the mysteries of one of TV’s most esoteric shows.

The first two series of Twin Peaks were first aired in 1990 and 1991, with Lynch rebooting the show for a third 18-episode series in 2017. Many of the original actors, such as Kyle MacLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn and ‘Log Lady’ Catherine E. Coulson, returned for the third series, which was highly praised by critics and fans alike, with other stars like Laura Dern and Naomi Watts joining the cast as new or previously unseen characters.

For the VR game, Lynch has revisited well-known environments featured in the series, such as the iconic Red Room (the stripy-floored, velvet curtain-clad parallel universe where Agent Cooper meets murdered teen Laura Palmer), the Twin Peaks’ Sheriff’s Department and the pine-filled forest around the fictional Washington town. Players will also be able to look around some of the spots new to the reboot – such as the New York-based observatory room, where supernatural forces cause a particularly grisly end for the guard and his girlfriend.

Collider Games has said that the structure of the game follows that of an escape room, where players must investigate environments to unlock levels. Solving puzzles to help Agent Copper and Gordon Cole (the FBI agent played by Lynch himself), players will also meet some of the show’s weird and terrifying characters, from the backwards-speaking inhabitants of the Black Lodge to the terrifying Bob himself.

“Utilising lines and sounds from the show itself, players will travel to Glastonbury Grove, only to end up in the puzzling Red Room,” said Collider in a statement about the game. “Fans of the series will follow in the footsteps of Special Agent Dale Cooper and try to make their way back into the life they left behind.”

The game will be available via Steam on Oculus Rift, Vive and Valve Index this month, and on Oculus Quest and PlayStation VR to follow. Watch a trailer for the game below.
