America’s Largest Cider Taproom to Open in Portland

Seattle’s Schilling Cider House to expand

Up in Emerald City, Schilling Cider House says it offers the largest draft selection of hard ciders in the nation, and now it’s bringing the title to Portland: WWeek reports the Seattle-based cidery and bottle shop will open a taproom with an even larger tap offering in spring 2017, inside the LOCA at the Goat Blocks building, at SE Belmont St and 10th Ave. Speaking with Eater, Schilling Cider says its Portland location will be a full-fledge cidery and offer 50 taps, as well as serve a gluten-free menu including tots and locally sourced sausages.

Schilling Portland will have “taps from four continents, gigantic beer-hall-style drinking tables made with slabs of repurposed wood, big wooden rafter beams, and a back patio featuring a concrete table with a long fire pit built into the table,” writes WWeek. Also, expect a large bottle selection and regular tap takeovers, and maybe cider-related classes. In Seattle, Schilling both makes its own hard ciders, as well as serves its favorite ciders from around the world.

For many in Portland, it probably seems like yesterday that Bushwacker’s had the largest on-tap selection of hard ciders. St. Honore Boulangerie took that title in 2013, only to be usurped in 2015 by Hawthorne Cider House. And later in 2015, Cider Bite opened with 25 taps; today, it has 32 (which WWeek says actually ties Schilling Cider House’s Seattle location for the nation’s largest hard cider selection on draft). Prepare now to imbibe apples in the form of booze flowing from roughly 40 guest taps, as well as 10 pouring Schilling’s own ciders.
