London Meetup - 16 September by The App Business

We will be in the Windy City come September 16, but we suggest those of you across the pond make a point of attending the London Meetup at The App Business’s new HQ, in the historic Spitfire Building. Meetup speaker Micheal Flarup is winging his way over from Copenhagen just to raise a pint with you, and maybe share a tip or two.

Not in the UK? Jealous? We’ve misplaced our zapper, so we can’t zap you to the meetup from where you are, but what we can do is give you a quick tour of London’s design scene. Or rather, Marco Sousa can. Marco’s a digital product designer at meetup host The App Business. Take it away, sir!

Tell us what you love about London.

London is in constant transformation. New people arrive every day, restaurants pop up left and right, and events are too many to keep track of. The city is always alive and conversations don’t get sucked into a tech black hole. Street art is everywhere and so are markets full of delicious food from all over the world. Cycling helps me enjoy all this without having to deal with commuter stress.

Tell us where you work, in relation to the rest of the city.

I work at The App Business in the heart of London right by King’s Cross Station at a newly refurbished building that survived World War II. We are new to the area, coming from our previous office in Soho only a few months ago, and are still discovering all the new places around us.

Tell us about the London design scene.

There is just so much going on at every level right now. From all the startups doing good work, like the guys at Marvel changing the way we prototype, to Dribbble stars like Fraser Davidson, to the influential DesignStudio agency. The community comes together quite a lot with great events like Glug, Design+Banter, UX London and Generate, as well as smaller weekly meetups.

Choose three shots from London Dribbblers you admire, and tell us what you like about each one.

Fraser Davidson, Mobile App Promotion, above left

I remember seeing this shot more then a year ago and being blown away by how such a complex scene was simplified yet still kept the necessary impact. I love seeing each animation the guys at Cub Studio come up with.

Ben Dunn, Discovery Piece, above center

I like this shot by Ben because of its focus on quick design iteration and the way he exposes the process not only with photos, but also with a related blog post. Sometimes people get blinded by shiny things. It’s worth focusing on the journey once in a while.

George Gliddon, Shoot Video/Select Filter, above right

I like the simplicity of the three screens and the minimalistic, almost Braun-like visual flavour of the camera controls. There is something awesome about that red on white.

If you can’t meet Marco in person on September 16, you can find him at Dribbble, on Twitter, and at www.immarco.com.
