A man who repeatedly turned himself into a human roadblock but wouldn’t say why has been jailed for a ninth time.

David Hampson was arrested after he obstructed a lorry in the middle of a city road during rush hour.

But the 48-year-old refused to speak to police and appeared before a judge on Friday.

A mysterious "Silent Man" who refuses to speak has been jailed for a ninth time for turning himself into a human roadblock - but he won't say why. David Hampson, 48, was hauled in front of the judge after he was caught stood in the middle of a busy road blocking a lorry. The bizarre human roadblock remained tight-lipped - and refused to even speak to confirm his name in court. And before he could face trial for repeatedly blocking traffic a jury found Hampson guilty of being "mute of malice" - meaning he stubbornly chooses not to speak to court officials. ?? Swansea Crown Court heard it was the second time Hampson had stood in front of traffic in two years, and was given a Criminal Behaviour Order – known as a Crasbo – to stop the behaviour in 2016.

But he didn’t attempt to explain his bizarre behaviour in court – and even refused to confirm his name and address.

He was found guilty of breaching the Crasbo and convicted of being ‘mute of malice’ – meaning he stubbornly chooses not to speak to court officials.

The serial offender was jailed for three and a half years.

Judge Peter Heywood said: ‘In my view, it is only a matter of time before you step in front of a car and a driver takes evasive action and somebody is injured.

‘This court has done everything it can over the last few years to find out what the problem is, and try to assist you – you pay it no heed.

‘You have a selfish vendetta.

‘I wish we could get to the bottom of this, but [Mr Hampson] simply won’t communicate with me or with others.

‘He won’t engage with probation or other agencies, and won’t co-operate with psychiatric reports.’

Jurors heard Hampson, of no fixed abode, can speak when he wants to and had no medical reason for choosing not to on each occasion.

But throughout all the years of legal proceedings, Hampson has declined to talk to police, lawyers, judges, probation staff and doctors.

The defendant has 12 previous convictions for 20 offences, including numerous similar obstruction matters at the same location.
