This Private Island for Sale Has Two Frank Lloyd Wright Homes

Petra Island, on a lake 55 miles north of New York City, could be yours.

By

Fifty-five miles north of New York City, in the quiet town of Mahopac, New York, there's one house that's been mesmerizing visitors since it was built in 1997.

Set on the 10-acre, heart-shaped Petra Island in Lake Mahopac, the cantilevered home's resemblance to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater is undeniable. That's because Joseph Massaro, who purchased the island in 1996, built the house based on designs by Wright himself.

Back in 1950, the illustrious architect was commissioned by an engineer named Ahmed Chahroudi to build "a masterpiece" on the island he owned at the time, according to the Guardian. At a lunch with Chahroudi and Fallingwater's owner, Edgar Kaufmann, Wright even said, "When I finish the house on the island, it will surpass your Fallingwater."

As it turned out, Chahroudi never got his house—he realized he couldn't afford it, so Wright created a small cottage island for him on the island instead. Following a conflict with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which declined to certify the house as one of Wright's, Massaro had it built based on the architect's drawings that came with the island.

Now it could all be yours. Following an unsubstantiated rumor that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were buying the island a few years ago, Chilton & Chadwick is now selling the property for $14.92 million. Scroll down to see what it looks like today.
